Citation Generator (APA, MLA, IEEE)

Enter one or more DOIs, or paste BibTeX, RIS or EndNote exports from Zotero, Google Scholar or Web of Science, to build a reference list in APA, MLA, IEEE or GB/T 7714 style. Copies keep journal and book titles in italics, ready to paste into Word or Google Docs, and DOI lookups can be exported as BibTeX for LaTeX.

Runs in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded

https://doi.org/ links work too

References

Enter DOIs or paste BibTeX to see formatted references here.

DOI metadata comes from registration agencies such as Crossref and DataCite. Title capitalisation is kept as registered; check journal abbreviations and other details against your target journal’s guidelines.

How to use

  1. Choose DOI and enter one or more DOIs, then click Look up — or choose Paste export and paste BibTeX, RIS or EndNote records.
  2. Switch between GB/T 7714, APA, MLA and IEEE on the right.
  3. Click Copy with italics and paste into your document, or copy or download the BibTeX.

Options explained

APA 7th and MLA 9th
Sorted by the first author’s surname. APA is common in psychology, education and the social sciences; MLA in the humanities.
IEEE
Numbered in order, common in engineering and computer science. More than six authors become the first author plus et al.
GB/T 7714-2015
The Chinese national standard used by Chinese universities and journals. More than three authors become the first three plus et al.
DOI lookup
Metadata comes from doi.org, covering Crossref and DataCite DOIs. arXiv papers have DOIs too (10.48550/arXiv.ID).

The same article in four styles

For a journal article with two authors, the same record is formatted like this (journal names are italic in the copied version):

Style Result
APA 7 Smith, J., & Lee, W. (2020). Deep Learning for Graphs. Journal of Graph ML, 12(3), 45–67. https://doi.org/10.1000/xyz123
MLA 9 Smith, Jane, and Wei Lee. “Deep Learning for Graphs.” Journal of Graph ML, vol. 12, no. 3, 2020, pp. 45–67, https://doi.org/10.1000/xyz123.
IEEE J. Smith and W. Lee, “Deep Learning for Graphs,” Journal of Graph ML, vol. 12, no. 3, pp. 45–67, 2020, doi: 10.1000/xyz123.
GB/T 7714 SMITH J, LEE W. Deep Learning for Graphs[J]. Journal of Graph ML, 2020, 12(3): 45-67. DOI:10.1000/xyz123.

The bracketed letter in GB/T 7714 marks the type of source: J for a journal article, M for a book, C for a conference paper, D for a thesis.

Frequently asked questions

My journal’s style differs slightly. What should I do?

Journals often add their own rules, such as abbreviated journal names or title capitalisation. Check the output against the author guidelines and adjust the details.

Why is title capitalisation inconsistent?

Titles are kept exactly as registered. APA uses sentence case for article titles while MLA and IEEE use title case, so adjust them by hand if needed.

Where is my data sent?

DOI lookups go straight from your browser to doi.org, not through our servers. Formatting BibTeX happens entirely on your device.
