How to use
- Type text, or switch to File and choose a file of any size.
- The MD5 hash appears as you type; large files show progress.
- Paste an expected hash to check whether it matches.
- Copy the hash in lower or upper case.
Options explained
- Text or file
- Text is hashed as UTF-8. Files are read in chunks, so even multi-gigabyte files can be hashed without loading them into memory.
- HMAC
- Computes a keyed HMAC-MD5 instead of a plain hash, for checking message signatures that use a shared secret.

Frequently asked questions
Is MD5 secure?
Not for security. Collisions can be created deliberately, so MD5 must not be used for passwords, signatures or certificates. It is still fine for spotting accidental corruption, such as checking that a download is complete.
Can an MD5 hash be reversed?
No. A hash cannot be turned back into the input. Short or common inputs can be found by trying many candidates, which is another reason not to use MD5 for passwords.
Why does my hash differ from another tool?
Check for a trailing newline or space and the text encoding. This tool hashes exactly what you type, encoded as UTF-8.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Hashing runs in your browser.
