Text to Binary Converter

Translate words into ones and zeros, or decode a binary message back into text. Each byte is written as 8 bits, and non-English text and emoji are handled through UTF-8.

Runs in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded

How to use

  1. Type text on the left to see it in binary on the right.
  2. Or paste binary on the right — with or without spaces — to read the message.
  3. Choose a separator and copy the result.

Options explained

Separator
Space separates each 8-bit byte. With None, the bits run together; when decoding, a continuous string is split into groups of 8.

Frequently asked questions

How is text turned into binary?

Each character is encoded as UTF-8 bytes, and each byte is written as 8 binary digits. The letter H is byte 72, which is 01001000.

Why do some characters take more than 8 bits?

UTF-8 uses one byte for English letters and digits, two for accented letters, three for most Chinese characters and four for emoji.

Can I convert to decimal or hex instead?

Yes. Switch the number base to hex, decimal or octal above the text boxes.
