WHOIS Lookup

Enter a domain to see its registrar, registration and expiry dates, status and name servers — to check when it expires, whether transfers are locked, or whether it is registered at all.

Processed on our server; nothing is stored

How to use

  1. Enter a domain. www or a full URL is fine; the registrable domain is used.
  2. Click Look up to see the registrar, dates, status and name servers.

Options explained

RDAP
The successor to WHOIS, returning structured data. Most generic endings such as .com, .net and .org support it.
WHOIS
Some country endings do not offer RDAP yet; for those the raw record from the registry’s WHOIS server is shown.
Status
clientTransferProhibited, the most common one, means the registrar has locked transfers — a normal safeguard.

How the lookup works

The tool first reduces what you typed to the registrable domain, so www.example.co.uk becomes example.co.uk. It then looks up the ending in the IANA RDAP list. If an RDAP server exists, you get a structured result with a days-left count beside the expiry date. If not, or if the RDAP server fails, it finds the ending’s WHOIS server through whois.iana.org, asks it on port 43 and shows the raw text. The Source line tells you which one answered.

Reading the status codes

RDAP spells status values with spaces; WHOIS uses the camel-case EPP name.

RDAP value EPP name Meaning
client transfer prohibited clientTransferProhibited The registrar has locked transfers to another registrar
client update prohibited clientUpdateProhibited Changes to the domain record are blocked
client delete prohibited clientDeleteProhibited The domain cannot be deleted
server transfer prohibited serverTransferProhibited The same lock, set by the registry
client hold / server hold clientHold / serverHold The domain is switched off in DNS
redemption period redemptionPeriod Deleted, but can still be restored for a fee
pending delete pendingDelete About to be released for registration

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I see the owner’s details?

Under privacy rules most registries and registrars now hide the names, phone numbers and emails of individual registrants.

What does “no record found” mean?

Usually that the domain is not registered and may be available. A few registries do not offer public lookups.

How accurate is the expiry date?

It comes from the registry and is usually updated soon after renewal, though some endings lag.

Privacy

This tool needs our server: what you enter or upload is sent over HTTPS, processed and then discarded, never stored. Server access logs record IP addresses and request URLs, used only to prevent abuse.
