Child Height and Weight Chart

See the usual height and weight range for every age from birth to 20. Choose the sex and the reference — WHO, US CDC or China — and the units; the table lists the 3rd, 50th (median) and 97th percentiles, and anything between the 3rd and 97th is in the usual range.

How to use

  1. Choose the reference, the child's sex and the units (cm and kg, or inches and pounds).
  2. Find the child's age and compare their height and weight with the P3, P50 and P97 columns.
  3. For an exact percentile, enter the measurements in the growth percentile calculator.

Options explained

P50 (median)
Half of children of that age and sex are taller or heavier, half are shorter or lighter.
P3 and P97
The lower and upper edges of the usual range. Outside them, talk to a paediatrician.
Age steps
Every 3 months to age 2, every 6 months to age 7, then every year. Estimate ages in between from the rows either side.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the chart change at age 2?

Under 2, children are measured lying down (length); from 2, standing (height). Standing height is slightly less, so the charts are joined at 2 years.

Which reference should I use?

Most countries use the WHO charts — the WHO Child Growth Standards up to 5 years and the WHO Growth Reference from 5 to 19 (weight only to 10). In the United States the CDC recommends WHO charts under 2 and the CDC charts from 2 to 20. China's standard is based on Chinese children and covers weight only under 7.

My child is between P3 and P50. Should I worry?

No — that is within the usual range. Follow the growth over time; a steady curve matters more than any single number.
