Keyboard Tester

Find keys that do not work, stick or register the wrong character. Press each key and watch it light up on the on-screen keyboard; keys that have worked stay marked, so you can see at a glance which ones are left.

Runs in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded

Press every key on your keyboard. Keys light up while pressed and stay marked once they have worked.

Hold several keys together to test rollover. Many keyboards stop registering after 6 keys, and some combinations fail sooner.

How to use

  1. Choose the Windows or Mac layout (picked automatically from your system), then click anywhere on the page so it has focus.
  2. Press each key; it lights up while held and stays marked afterwards.
  3. Check the key, code and location of the last key pressed.
  4. Hold several keys together to test rollover, then Reset to start again.

Options explained

key and code
key is the character the key produces with your current layout; code is the physical key position. On a French AZERTY keyboard the key labelled A reports key "a" and code KeyQ.
Rollover
How many keys the keyboard reports at the same time. Gaming keyboards often support all keys (N-key rollover); many office keyboards stop at 6.

Reading the last-key panel

The panel shows the standard properties of the browser’s keyboard event. These examples show how they differ between keys that look alike:

Key you press key code location
Left Shift Shift ShiftLeft Left
Right Shift Shift ShiftRight Right
Enter on the main block Enter Enter Standard
Enter on the number pad Enter NumpadEnter Numpad
1 on the number pad (Num Lock on) 1 Numpad1 Numpad
1 in the top row 1 Digit1 Standard

The location column uses four values: Standard, Left, Right and Numpad. If a key lights up the wrong cap, compare the code value with the one in this table: code follows the physical position, so a wrong code points to a hardware or firmware problem, while a wrong key with the right code points to your layout or input language.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some keys not light up?

Keys like Print Screen, Fn and some media keys are handled by the operating system or the keyboard itself and never reach the browser. The Windows key may also open the Start menu first.

Can I test a laptop keyboard?

Yes. The Windows layout is a full-size US keyboard and the Mac layout is a MacBook keyboard; keys your laptop does not have simply stay unmarked.

Does it record what I type?

No. Only the keys pressed while this page is open are shown, and nothing is stored or sent.

Can I test a Mac keyboard?

Yes. On a Mac the layout switches to Mac automatically (you can also switch it yourself) and shows a MacBook keyboard with command, option and control. Hold fn when testing F1–F12, otherwise they change brightness and volume; fn itself never reaches the browser.
