Gamepad Tester

Connect a controller and press any button to see every button, trigger and stick live. The gamepad tester helps you check a new controller or track down stick drift and dead buttons without installing anything.

Connect a controller by USB or Bluetooth, then press any button on it

Browsers only show a controller after one of its buttons has been pressed.

How to use

  1. Connect the controller to your computer or phone by USB or Bluetooth, then press any button on it.
  2. Press each button in turn. Buttons you have pressed are marked, and the count at the top shows how many are tested.
  3. Turn each stick in a full circle and let go. The dot should return to the centre and the reading should fall back inside the dead zone.
  4. Squeeze each trigger slowly and watch the bar rise smoothly from 0% to 100%. Click Test vibration to check the motors.

Options explained

Dead zone
The area around the centre of a stick that is ignored, shown as a dashed circle. If a released stick still reads beyond it, the stick is drifting. Most games default to about 0.1.
Triggers
LT/RT (L2/R2, ZL/ZR) are analogue and show how far they are pressed from 0 to 100%. The Switch Pro Controller's ZL/ZR are only on or off.
Standard mapping
When the browser recognises the layout, buttons are labelled as printed on Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo controllers. Otherwise they are numbered, and you can still test them.

Button numbers and stick readings

Browsers report the buttons of a controller with a standard layout as numbers from 0 to 16, following the W3C Gamepad API. The tester shows them with the labels printed on your controller, which are these:

Number Xbox PlayStation Switch
0 – 3 A, B, X, Y ✕, ○, □, △ B, A, Y, X
4, 5 LB, RB L1, R1 L, R
6, 7 LT, RT L2, R2 ZL, ZR
8, 9 View, Menu Create, Options −, +
10, 11 LS, RS (stick press) L3, R3 LS, RS
12 – 15 Up, down, left, right Up, down, left, right Up, down, left, right
16 Xbox button PS button Home

Controllers without the standard layout show numbers such as B0 and B1 instead. Each stick gives an x value and a y value between −1 and 1. The distance from the centre is sqrt(x² + y²), capped at 1, and the stick counts as outside the dead zone when that distance is greater than the dead zone. For example, a released stick reading x = 0.09 and y = 0.07 is 0.114 from the centre, which is outside a dead zone of 0.1 and suggests drift.

Frequently asked questions

My controller is connected but nothing shows up.

Browsers only expose a controller after one of its buttons has been pressed, so press any button first. If it still does not appear, try a USB cable that carries data, pair it again over Bluetooth, or use Chrome or Edge.

Why can't I test vibration?

Vibration needs browser support. Chrome and Edge support it best; some browser and controller combinations do not, and the page tells you so.

What can I do about stick drift?

Calibrate the controller in your system settings or the maker's app first. For slight drift, raise the dead zone in your game. Strong drift that gets worse usually needs the stick cleaned or replaced.

Can I test more than one controller?

Yes. Each connected controller gets its own panel.
