How to use
- Paste one full URL per line. To give a page its own date, add it after a space, such as 2026-09-30.
- Set the Last modified date for the other pages, or clear it to leave dates out.
- Download sitemap.xml (or the ZIP with all files and the index for large sites).
- Upload it to your site root, reference it in robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.
Options explained
- Last modified
- Tells search engines when a page last changed meaningfully. Only use real dates — a date that changes every day is ignored.
- Split files
- Each file holds at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB. The index file lists all parts, and you submit only the index.
What goes in, what comes out
Suppose you paste these lines with the Last modified date set to 2026-10-11:
https://example.com/
https://example.com/blog/hello-world 2026-09-30
https://example.com/products?id=1&color=red
https://example.com/
example.com/about
https://example.com/café
The second line keeps its own date. The repeated first line is removed and counted as a duplicate, and line 5 is skipped because it has no http:// or https:// scheme. The result:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
<url>
<loc>https://example.com/</loc>
<lastmod>2026-10-11</lastmod>
</url>
<url>
<loc>https://example.com/blog/hello-world</loc>
<lastmod>2026-09-30</lastmod>
</url>
<url>
<loc>https://example.com/products?id=1&color=red</loc>
<lastmod>2026-10-11</lastmod>
</url>
<url>
<loc>https://example.com/caf%C3%A9</loc>
<lastmod>2026-10-11</lastmod>
</url>
</urlset>
The ampersand in the query string is escaped as &, as XML requires, and the accented letter is percent-encoded. A line with a date in some other format is still used as a URL; the page then falls back to the shared Last modified date.
When the list needs more than one file, they are named sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml and so on, and the index is sitemap_index.xml. The index links to each file under the domain of the first URL, or under the address you enter in Where the sitemap files will live, which appears only once a split is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Why are changefreq and priority missing?
Google has said it ignores both, and other search engines give them little weight, so the generator keeps the file simple.
Can a sitemap list pages from another domain?
Normally no. URLs should be on the same host as the sitemap; the tool marks lines from other domains.
How do I check the result?
Paste or open it in the XML Sitemap Checker, which validates the format, dates and URLs.
