Numbers, dates and percentages are written the way the cell shows them, for example 15/01/2024 or 12.5%, not as the internal serial number.
BOM
A byte order mark at the start of the file tells Excel the CSV is UTF-8. Without it, double-clicking the file in Excel can show accented or Chinese characters as garbage.

What the CSV looks like

The file uses a comma as separator and CRLF (Windows) line endings. A field is wrapped in double quotes when it contains a comma, a double quote or a line break, and a double quote inside a field is doubled. A cell holding Smith, J. is written as "Smith, J.", and one holding 5" pipe as "5"" pipe". Booleans are written as shown in Excel, TRUE or FALSE.

If the CSV will be opened by a program that does not expect a byte order mark, leave the BOM option off. Excel on Windows needs it for non-English text, but many scripts read the BOM as part of the first column name.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to formulas?

CSV only holds values, so each formula is replaced by the result Excel saved with the file.

How are merged cells handled?

The value goes in the top-left cell of the merged area and the other cells are left empty, which is how Excel itself exports CSV.

Why does a long number end in zeros?

If Excel stored something like an ID or card number as a number, it only kept 15 significant digits, and the lost digits cannot be recovered. Format such columns as Text in Excel before typing them in.

Can it open password-protected files?

No. Remove the password in Excel first.
