Merge and Split Excel Files

Collecting reports from every team into one sheet, or breaking a master list up by department, are two of the most tedious Excel chores. Choose your files and click once. Columns can be in any order — they are matched by header name.

Runs in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded

or drop .xlsx, .xls or .csv files here

Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. The first row is treated as the header.

How to use

  1. In Merge, choose several Excel files, tick the sheets to include, choose Into one sheet or Keep separate sheets, and click the merge button to download.
  2. In Split, choose one Excel file, then the sheet and the column to split by.
  3. Choose one workbook with a sheet per value or one file per value (as a ZIP), then click Split and download.

Options explained

Matching by header
When merging into one sheet, the first row is the header and columns with the same name are combined. Missing columns are left blank and new ones are added at the end.
Sheet names
Excel sheet names are limited to 31 characters and cannot contain \ / ? * [ ] :, so they are cleaned and de-duplicated when splitting.

Example: merging by header, splitting by column

With Into one sheet and the source column switched on, two sheets whose columns are in a different order:

Source file / sheet Header row Data row
north.xlsx / Sheet1 Name, Sales Ann, 120 and Bo, 90
south.xlsx / Sheet1 Sales, Name, Region 75, Cy, South

merge into this single sheet:

Source Name Sales Region
north.xlsx / Sheet1 Ann 120
north.xlsx / Sheet1 Bo 90
south.xlsx / Sheet1 Cy 75 South

Split works the other way round: every group keeps the header row, groups appear in the order their value is first seen, empty rows are skipped, and rows whose chosen column is empty go into a group called (empty). Splitting a Dept column with the values Sales, HR, Sales and a blank gives three groups: Sales with 2 rows, HR with 1 and (empty) with 1.
