Stacked discounts are not added together
“20% off, plus an extra 10% at checkout” is not 30% off. The second discount applies to the already reduced price: $100 → $80 → $72, which is 28% off in total.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add two discounts together?
No. 10% off followed by 20% off is 0.9 × 0.8 = 72% of the price, a 28% discount rather than 30%.
How do I work out the discount from two prices?
Divide the saving by the original price. A price cut from 50 to 40 saves 10, which is 20% off. The percentage calculator does this for you.
Is sales tax included?
No. Apply the discount first, then use the VAT and sales tax calculator to add tax to the sale price.
