Examples
| Bill | Tip | People | Each pays | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 86.40 | 18% | 4 | 25.49 | 101.95 |
| 120.00 | 20% | 3 | 48.00 | 144.00 |
Tip amounts at a glance
| Bill | 15% | 18% | 20% | 25% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $20 | $3.00 | $3.60 | $4.00 | $5.00 |
| $50 | $7.50 | $9.00 | $10.00 | $12.50 |
| $80 | $12.00 | $14.40 | $16.00 | $20.00 |
| $100 | $15.00 | $18.00 | $20.00 | $25.00 |
A quick mental check: 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left, and 20% is double that.
Splitting the bill
A $120 dinner for four with an 18% tip comes to $141.60 — $35.40 each. Tick Round each share up so everyone pays a whole amount; the extra goes to the tip.
Tipping customs differ: 15–20% is usual at sit-down restaurants in the US and Canada, while in much of Europe and Asia service is included or a small round-up is enough.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity.
What if people ordered different amounts?
The calculator splits evenly. Settle individual items separately, then split shared dishes here.
What does rounding up do to the tip?
The rounded total is slightly higher than the bill plus tip; the difference is added to the tip shown.
