How to use
- Enter the amount and choose whether it includes tax.
- Enter the tax rate or pick a common one.
- Read the net amount, the tax and the gross amount.
Options explained
- Removing tax
- Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate); tax = net × rate. Multiplying the gross price by the rate overstates the tax.
- Rates
- Standard VAT is 20% in the UK, 19% in Germany and 21% in the Netherlands and Spain; US sales tax differs by state and city.

Frequently asked questions
Why isn't the VAT in 120 just 20% of 120?
VAT is charged on the net price. 20% of 120 is 24, but the tax actually included is 120 ÷ 1.2 × 0.2 = 20.
Does this work for US sales tax?
Yes. Enter your combined state and local rate — for example 8.875% in New York City — and choose "Before tax".
Can I use it for GST?
Yes, GST in Australia, Canada, New Zealand or India works the same way as VAT.
