How to use

  1. Choose the scale — US letter grades, or a percentage conversion.
  2. Enter each course's credits and grade; choose Add course for more.
  3. Read your GPA, total credits and, for percentages, the weighted average.

Options explained

US letter grades
A/A+ 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7, F 0. Some schools give A+ 4.3.
Standard 4.0 (percentages)
90–100 = 4, 80–89 = 3, 70–79 = 2, 60–69 = 1, below 60 = 0.
Credit weighting
Each grade counts in proportion to its credits, so a 4-credit course weighs twice as much as a 2-credit one.

Example

Calculus (4 credits, A−), English (3 credits, B+), Chemistry (4 credits, B): GPA = (4 × 3.7 + 3 × 3.3 + 4 × 3.0) ÷ 11 = 3.34.

Example: one semester with letter grades

Course Credits Grade Grade points Credits × points
Calculus 3 A 4.0 12.0
Biology with lab 4 B+ 3.3 13.2
Composition 3 A− 3.7 11.1
Art history 2 C 2.0 4.0
Total 12 40.3

GPA = 40.3 ÷ 12 = 3.36. The 4-credit course counts twice as much as the 2-credit one, which is why a C in a small course hurts less.

Same percentages, different scales

Percentage-based schools convert scores to grade points in different ways. The same four courses — 92, 85, 78 and 66 with 3, 4, 3 and 2 credits (weighted average 81.8) — give:

Scale 92 85 78 66 GPA
Standard 4.0 4 3 2 1 2.67
Improved 4.0 4 4 3 2 3.42
Peking University 4.0 3.88 3.58 3.09 1.83 3.24

When you apply abroad, check which conversion the receiving university wants — or send your transcript to a credential evaluation service.

Frequently asked questions

Is this my cumulative GPA?

Enter all your courses to get a cumulative GPA, or one term's courses for a term GPA.

Do pass/fail courses count?

Usually not. Leave them out unless your school says otherwise.

My school gives A+ a 4.3. What should I do?

This calculator uses 4.0 for A+. Check your school's scale; for a 4.3 system, results will be slightly lower here.
