How to use
- Under Weighted grade, enter each assignment or exam with its score and weight (in percent).
- Read your current grade; weights do not need to add up to 100, the grade covers what you have entered so far.
- Under What do I need on the final?, enter the final exam weight and the grade you want.
- Read the score you need on the final, or check the table for other targets.
Options explained
- Weight (%)
- How much each item counts towards the course grade, as listed in your syllabus. Only items with a score and a weight above 0 are counted.
- Current grade (%)
- Filled in from the weighted grade above; you can also type it in directly, for example from your school’s online gradebook.
- Final exam weight (%)
- The share of the course grade that the final exam is worth.
Score needed on the final
What you need on the final exam to finish with an 80 (B−) or a 90 (A−), depending on your current grade and how much the final is worth. Values over 100 mean the target is out of reach without extra credit.
| Current grade | Final worth 20% | Final worth 30% | Final worth 40% | Final worth 50% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 75 → target 80 | 100 | 91.7 | 87.5 | 85 |
| 80 → target 90 | 130 | 113.3 | 105 | 100 |
| 85 → target 90 | 110 | 101.7 | 97.5 | 95 |
| 85 → target 80 | 60 | 68.3 | 72.5 | 75 |
| 90 → target 90 | 90 | 90 | 90 | 90 |
The last row shows a useful rule: to keep the grade you already have, you need the same score on the final, whatever its weight.
Examples
Grade so far. Homework 92 (20%), quizzes 85 (15%) and a midterm 78 (25%) cover 60% of the course. The weighted average is 84.42 — a B on the US scale.
Full course. Participation 88 (10%), labs 76 (30%), project 91 (20%) and final exam 82 (40%) give a course grade of 82.6, a B−.
Frequently asked questions
How is the score needed on the final calculated?
Course grade = current grade × (1 − final weight) + final score × final weight, solved for the final score. With a current grade of 84, a final worth 40% and a target of 90, you need (90 − 84 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 99.
What if the result is above 100?
The target cannot be reached unless your school gives extra credit; the table shows which lower targets are still possible.
Which letter scale does it use?
The common US 10-point scale with plus and minus (A 93+, A− 90+, B+ 87+ and so on). Schools differ, so check your syllabus.
