Average Calculator

Paste a list of numbers to get the average (arithmetic mean) with the working shown, plus the median, mode, count, sum and range. Switch to Weighted average when some values count more than others — exam marks with different weights, or grades and credit hours.

How to use

  1. Choose Average or Weighted average.
  2. For an average, paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines. For a weighted average, put one value and its weight on each line, such as 85 30%.
  3. Read the result and the calculation underneath.

Options explained

Mean
The sum of the numbers divided by how many there are. (72 + 85 + 90) ÷ 3 = 82.33.
Weighted average
Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σweight. Weights can be percentages or any numbers; they do not need to add up to 100.
Median and mode
The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted (the average of the two middle values for an even count); the mode is the most frequent value.

Worked example: weighted average

Assessment Score Weight
Test 1 85 30%
Test 2 90 30%
Final exam 78 40%

Weighted average = (85 × 30 + 90 × 30 + 78 × 40) ÷ 100 = 83.7. The simple average of the three scores would be 84.33 — the lower final exam pulls the weighted result down because it counts for more.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use a weighted average?

When values do not count equally — a final exam worth 40% and two tests worth 30% each, or a grade point average where each course has a number of credits.

Mean or median — which is better?

The median is less affected by extreme values. Salaries or house prices are usually described by the median; test scores by the mean.

What happens to lines I typed wrongly?

In weighted mode, lines that cannot be read are ignored and listed by line number so you can fix them.
