How to use
- Type or paste your numbers, or choose Load sample.
- Read the results; the sorted data is listed below for checking.
Options explained
- Population or sample
- Use the population figures (÷ n) when you have every value; use the sample figures (÷ n − 1) for a subset used to estimate a larger group — Excel's VAR.P and VAR.S.
- Quartiles
- Linear interpolation, matching Excel's QUARTILE.INC.
- Mode
- The most frequent value, which can be more than one. If every value appears once there is no mode.
Example
Data: 72, 85, 90, 66, 85, 78, 94, 85, 70, 88
| Statistic | Result |
|---|---|
| Mean | 81.3 |
| Median | 85 |
| Mode | 85 |
| Q1 / Q3 | 73.5 / 87.25 |
| Standard deviation (population) | 8.8436 |
| Standard deviation (sample) | 9.322 |
Frequently asked questions
Should I use the mean or the median?
They are similar for evenly spread data. With outliers, such as incomes, the median better represents a typical value.
Can I paste a column from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Anything that is not a number is ignored.
What does standard deviation tell me?
How spread out the values are around the mean. A smaller value means the data is more tightly clustered.
