How to use
- Type a number, with or without thousands separators.
- Choose US or UK style and a currency for the cheque format.
- Copy the version you need.
Options explained
- US and UK style
- British English adds "and" after hundreds (one hundred and five); American English usually leaves it out (one hundred five).
- Cheque format
- Whole units in words and cents as a fraction, as banks expect on cheques and many invoices. Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent.
- Ordinal
- Positions in words, such as first, twelfth or one hundred fifth. Only for whole, non-negative numbers.
Examples, US and UK
The same numbers come out like this. UK style puts “and” after the hundreds, and also after the thousands or millions when the rest is below one hundred:
| Number | US style | UK style |
|---|---|---|
| 105 | one hundred five | one hundred and five |
| 1234 | one thousand two hundred thirty-four | one thousand two hundred and thirty-four |
| 2026 | two thousand twenty-six | two thousand and twenty-six |
| 1,000,001 | one million one | one million and one |
| -7.05 | minus seven point zero five | minus seven point zero five |
Ordinals use the last word of the number, so 21 becomes twenty-first, 40 fortieth, 105 one hundred fifth and 112 one hundred twelfth.
For the cheque format, 1234.56 in dollars becomes “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars”. The cents always follow “and” as a fraction of 100, and a third decimal of 5 or more rounds up, so 99.999 gives “One hundred and 00/100 dollars”.
