How to use
- Choose an audio file (a video works too — its sound is used).
- Drag the two lines on the waveform, or type start and end times, then click Play selection to check.
- Set the fades, choose a format (M4A, WAV or iPhone ringtone M4R) and click Cut and download.
Options explained
- Fades
- The start and end ramp up and down over the set number of seconds, avoiding an abrupt start or a click at the end. For ringtones a 1–2 s fade-out works well.
- iPhone ringtone
- M4R is M4A (AAC) with a different extension. iPhone only lists ringtones up to 40 seconds; sync it with Finder or iTunes, or import it in GarageBand to set it.
How the fades are applied
Fade in (s) and Fade out (s) are straight-line ramps. The gain climbs from 0 to full over the fade in and falls from full to 0 over the fade out, so the first and last samples of a faded cut are silent. For a 2-second fade out:
| Time before the end of the clip | Gain | Level |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0 s | 1.00 | 0 dB |
| 1.5 s | 0.75 | −2.5 dB |
| 1.0 s | 0.50 | −6 dB |
| 0.5 s | 0.25 | −12 dB |
| end | 0.00 | silent |
The Start and End boxes accept 75, 1:15, 1:15.5 and 0:01:15. The cut is placed at the nearest audio sample, so unlike video it is not tied to keyframes.
Frequently asked questions
Why no MP3?
Browsers cannot encode MP3. M4A sounds better at a smaller size and plays on phones and computers.
Does cutting reduce quality?
WAV export is lossless. M4A is re-compressed once at 192 kbps AAC, which is usually indistinguishable.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Decoding, cutting and encoding all happen in your browser.
