How to use
- Choose a video.
- Choose M4A (small files) or WAV (lossless, best for editing).
- Click Extract audio to download.
Options explained
- M4A
- When the video's audio is already AAC it is copied with no quality loss; other codecs are converted to AAC.
- WAV
- Uncompressed PCM audio — large files that import cleanly into editing software.
What happens to the audio track
| Source audio in the video | M4A (AAC) result | WAV result |
|---|---|---|
| AAC (typical for MP4 and MOV from phones and cameras) | Copied unchanged, no quality loss | Decoded to uncompressed audio |
| Opus, Vorbis, MP3 or another codec (WebM and MKV often use Opus or Vorbis) | Converted to AAC, one more lossy step | Decoded to uncompressed audio |
Only the first audio track is used. A video with no sound track shows “This video has no sound track.” and the Extract audio button stays disabled.
The file is saved with the video’s name and the new extension, so lecture.mp4 gives lecture.m4a or lecture.wav. Choose WAV when you will edit the sound further, since it adds no extra compression step.
Frequently asked questions
Why no MP3?
Browsers cannot encode MP3, and MP3 encoder libraries have licensing terms we cannot use. M4A plays on phones, computers and most music apps.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser.
Can I extract only part of the video?
Trim the clip first with the video trimmer, then extract the audio.
