PDF N-up (Multiple Pages per Sheet)

Printing slides or handouts one page per sheet wastes paper. Choose how many pages go on each sheet and get a 2-up or 4-up PDF ready to print — or turn a document into a booklet you can print double-sided and fold, or fill a sheet with copies of one page. Pages stay vector, so text stays sharp when scaled down.

Pages are placed as vector content, so text stays sharp and selectable. Several PDFs are combined in the order you add them. Blank pages are skipped.

How to use

  1. Choose one or more PDF files; several files are combined in the order added.
  2. Choose the layout (pages per sheet, repeat each page, or booklet), which pages to use, the paper, orientation and order, and adjust margins, gap, borders or cut lines.
  3. Check the preview on the right and click Download PDF.

Options explained

Automatic orientation
Picks portrait or landscape paper from the first page's shape so each page is as large as possible. For example, landscape slides 2-up go one above the other on portrait paper.
Order
Left to right, then down is the usual Z order; top to bottom, then across is N order.
Booklet
Pages are imposed for saddle stitching — the outer sheet carries the last and first pages on the front and pages 2 and 3 on the back, and so on. Print double-sided with “flip on short edge”, fold the stack in half and staple along the fold. Blank pages are added so the total is a multiple of 4.
Repeat each page
Each page is copied to every slot on its own sheet — print 4 flyers or 8 labels per sheet from a one-page PDF, then cut along the cut lines.
Pages
Leave empty to use every page, or list pages and ranges such as 1-5, 8, 10- (to the end).

Grids and sheet counts

Each setting of pages per sheet uses a fixed grid of columns by rows on portrait paper. On landscape paper the grid is turned round. This table shows the result for a 10-page A4 portrait PDF with Automatic orientation, the default 8 mm margin and 4 mm gap on A4:

Pages per sheet Grid on portrait paper Paper chosen Sheets for 10 pages
2 1 × 2 landscape 5
4 2 × 2 portrait 3
6 2 × 3 landscape 2
8 2 × 4 landscape 2
9 3 × 3 portrait 2
16 4 × 4 portrait 1

Every page is scaled to fit its cell, never stretched. A 4-up sheet of A4 pages has cells 95 mm wide and 138.5 mm high, so the pages are reduced to about 45%. Slides that are wider than they are tall behave the other way round: 2-up puts them one above the other on portrait paper, and 4-up uses landscape paper. If a page in your PDF has no content at all, it is skipped, so the sheet count can be lower than you expect.

Frequently asked questions

Will the text get blurry?

No. Pages are scaled as vectors, so text stays selectable and sharp. It is just smaller on paper; 9-up and 16-up suit overviews.

How do I print the booklet?

Print the downloaded PDF double-sided and choose “flip on short edge” (sometimes called short-edge binding). Keep the sheets in order, fold the whole stack in half and staple on the fold. For books read right to left, tick “Bind on the right”.

How is this different from my printer's pages-per-sheet setting?

The result is similar, but you get a PDF you can send to others, take to a print shop or print from a phone.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
