How to use
- Choose whether to generate paragraphs, sentences or words, and how many.
- Keep "Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" for the familiar opening, or turn it off for fully random text.
- Tick "Wrap paragraphs in <p>" to paste straight into HTML.
- Copy the text, or press Generate for a new variation.
Options explained
- Paragraphs
- Each paragraph has 3 to 6 sentences of varying length, which looks like real body copy.
- Sentences
- Sentences of 6 to 15 words, occasionally with a comma.
- Words
- An exact number of words — useful for testing headlines and buttons.
- Chinese
- Placeholder text built from common Chinese characters with Chinese punctuation, for testing CJK typography, line breaking and font fallback.
The classic passage
“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.” It derives from Cicero’s phrase “neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…” — “nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain”.
How much placeholder text to generate
| Filling | Generate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A button or menu label | 1–3 words | Check that long labels wrap or truncate gracefully |
| A headline | 5–10 words | Try a long one too — real headlines are often longer than designs expect |
| A product card or meta description | 1–2 sentences | Search engines usually show about 150–160 characters of a description |
| A blog post layout | 4–6 paragraphs | Turn on “Wrap paragraphs in <p>” to paste straight into HTML |
| A full article or long page | 10+ paragraphs | Useful for testing scrolling, sticky headers and a table of contents |
Tips
Test both short and long. Generate the smallest and the largest amount of text a component could hold, and check that nothing overflows or overlaps.
Use the right script. Latin placeholder text does not show how a layout behaves with Chinese, which has no spaces between words and different line-breaking. Switch the language to Chinese for pages aimed at Chinese readers.
Replace it before launch. Search for “lorem” in your templates before publishing, so no placeholder text reaches real visitors or search engines.
Frequently asked questions
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
It is scrambled Latin from Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (45 BC), used as typesetting filler since at least the 1500s and popularised by Letraset and desktop publishing software.
Why use placeholder text instead of real copy?
Readers focus on content; nonsense text lets people judge the layout, typography and spacing without being distracted by the words.
Is the text different every time?
Yes. Words are picked at random from the classic lorem ipsum vocabulary each time you press Generate.
Can I use it commercially?
Yes. Lorem ipsum is in the public domain and free to use anywhere.
