How to use
- Paste your title into the box — or several titles, one per line.
- Find the style your publication requires and click Copy.
- Check proper nouns such as names and places, which can’t be detected automatically.
Options explained
- APA 7th
- Used in psychology, education and the social sciences. Every word of four or more letters is capitalized, so With, From and Into are capitalized too.
- Chicago and MLA
- Used in the humanities and publishing. Prepositions are lowercase whatever their length, but the first and last words are always capitalized.
- Sentence case
- Used for article and book titles in APA reference lists and by many journals for paper titles.
Same title, five styles
Here is one title converted with each style:
Input: the quick-thinking guide to working with the API: a look at what's new in Python and beyond
APA: The Quick-Thinking Guide to Working With the API: A Look at What's New in Python and Beyond
Chicago: The Quick-Thinking Guide to Working with the API: A Look at What's New in Python and Beyond
MLA: The Quick-Thinking Guide to Working with the API: A Look at What's New in Python and Beyond
AP: The Quick-Thinking Guide to Working With the API: A Look at What's New in Python and Beyond
Sentence: The quick-thinking guide to working with the API: A look at what's new in python and beyond
The only difference between the title-case styles here is With, which has four letters and so is capitalized by APA and AP but not by Chicago or MLA. The first word and the first word after a colon are always capitalized, and each part of a hyphenated word is treated as a word of its own. API stays as typed because it is already in capitals.
Sentence case lowercases everything except the first word of the title and of each part after a colon, so “Python” became “python”. That is the case the tool cannot know about: retype proper nouns after converting, or capitalize them in the input first, since words that already contain capitals are left alone.
Frequently asked questions
Which style should I use?
Follow your journal’s or publisher’s author guidelines. Psychology and education usually use APA, the humanities Chicago or MLA, and news writing AP; many science and engineering journals, including IEEE, ask for sentence case.
Why are short words like is and are capitalized?
Only articles, prepositions and conjunctions stay lowercase. Is, are and be are verbs, so they are capitalized however short they are.
Are proper nouns capitalized automatically?
No. Words that already have capitals are kept, but names typed in lowercase can’t be recognized, so capitalize them before converting.
