How Word formatting becomes Markdown
| In Word | In the Markdown |
|---|---|
| Heading 1, Heading 2 | #, ## at the start of the line |
| Bold, italic | **bold**, *italic* |
| Bulleted list | - item |
| Numbered list | 1. item |
| Hyperlink | [text](address) |
| Table | A pipe table |
| Table with merged cells | Kept as an HTML table, because Markdown tables cannot merge cells |
Images follow your choice under Images: Leave out removes them, and Embed as Base64 puts each one in the text as a data address, which makes the file much larger. If some content could not be converted exactly, a count is shown below the options.
A Markdown table must start with a header row. If the converted table has none, an empty header row is added so the table still displays.
Frequently asked questions
Does it support .doc?
No. Save old .doc files as .docx in Word first.
Why did my headings become plain text?
Only paragraphs using Word's Heading 1, Heading 2… styles are recognised as headings. Text that is just large and bold is not.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser.
