  4. Click Download PDF and print.

Options explained

Difficulty
Easy places words left to right and top to bottom; Medium adds diagonals; Hard uses all eight directions, including backwards.
Grid size
8 × 8 to 20 × 20 letters. Words longer than the grid, or that do not fit after several tries, are listed so you can enlarge the grid.
Other languages
Words in any script work. For non-English words, the empty squares are filled with letters from your own word list so the puzzle stays fair.

Choosing size and difficulty

Players Grid size Difficulty Words
Young children (5–7) 8 × 8 Easy — left to right and top to bottom only 5–8 short words
Children (8–10) 10 × 10 or 12 × 12 Medium — adds diagonals 8–12 words
Older kids and adults 15 × 15 Hard — all eight directions, including backwards 12–20 words
Puzzle fans 18 × 18 or 20 × 20 Hard 20–30 words

Long words need a grid at least as wide as the word; if a word cannot be placed, the tool tells you which one.

Ideas for word lists

Spelling practice. Use this week’s spelling words — finding them in the grid makes pupils look at each letter.

Vocabulary for a topic. Planets, animals of the rainforest, parts of a plant or the vocabulary of a language lesson.

Party and holiday puzzles. Guests’ names for a birthday, or Christmas, Halloween and Thanksgiving words for a classroom activity.

The PDF has the puzzle on the first page and the answer key on the second, so you can print the puzzle for the class and keep the answers.
