How to use
- Copy cells from a spreadsheet or web page and paste them on the left (CSV works too).
- Choose the alignment. The first row becomes the header.
- Copy the Markdown code on the right.
Options explained
- Alignment
- In auto mode, columns whose body cells are all numbers are right-aligned (---:) and the rest left-aligned; you can also align everything left, center or right.
- Padding
- Cells are padded by display width, counting CJK characters as two, so the source lines up in a monospace font.
- Special characters
- A | inside a cell is escaped as \| and line breaks become <br>, so the table doesn’t break.
Example output
Pasting these cells, with a pipe in the first note:
Name Qty Note
Apple 12 a|b
Pear 3
gives this table with automatic alignment:
| Name | Qty | Note |
| ----- | --: | ---- |
| Apple | 12 | a\|b |
| Pear | 3 | |
The Qty column is right-aligned because every body cell is a number, which is why its separator ends in a colon. Each column is at least three characters wide, the pipe in a|b is escaped, and the empty cell is kept so the row still has three columns.
Frequently asked questions
Can I merge cells?
Markdown tables don’t support merged cells. Use an HTML table if you need them.
Can I skip the header row?
GitHub-flavored Markdown tables require a header row. If your data has none, add column names as the first row.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The conversion happens in your browser.
