Options explained
- SRT
- SubRip, the most widely supported format. Numbered cues with times written as 00:01:23,450.
- WebVTT
- The format the HTML5 track element and most web players use. Times use a dot, 00:01:23.450, and the file starts with WEBVTT.
- ASS
- Advanced SubStation Alpha, used by fansubs and Aegisub. When converting from ASS, styling tags such as {\an8} are removed; when converting to ASS, a single default style is created.
- Plain text
- Just the dialogue, one line per row, without numbers or times. Handy for transcripts and translation.

Frequently asked questions
My Chinese subtitles show up as garbled characters. What can I do?
Open the file with the file button instead of copy-and-paste. Files saved as GBK/GB2312 or UTF-16 are detected and decoded automatically, and the result is always saved as UTF-8.
Are ASS styles and positions kept?
No. SRT and WebVTT cannot express fonts, colours or karaoke effects, so only the text and timing are converted. Line breaks (\N) are kept.
Which format should I use for a web video?
WebVTT. Browsers only accept WebVTT in the track element, so convert SRT files before adding them to a page.
Is there a size limit?
No fixed limit. A feature film has about 1,500 cues and converts instantly. The preview shows the first 200 lines, but the download contains all of them.
