How to use
- Paste the text you want to send. Token, character and word counts appear immediately.
- If it's too long, set the maximum tokens or characters per part under Split into parts.
- Copy each part in turn into the AI chat.
Options explained
- Token count
- Counted exactly with OpenAI's public o200k_base vocabulary, used by GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-5 and the o-series. Other models' tokenizers give different counts.
- Splitting
- Splits fall between paragraphs first, then between sentences, and only cut inside a sentence that is too long by itself. The Part i/n line counts toward the limit.
What tokens look like, and how much room the part labels take
A token is a chunk of text from the model’s vocabulary, not a word. Counts with the o200k_base vocabulary:
| Text | Characters | Tokens |
|---|---|---|
Hello, world! |
13 | 4 |
tokenization |
12 | 2 |
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. |
44 | 10 |
1234567890 |
10 | 4 |
https://example.com/a/b?c=d |
27 | 9 |
你好,世界 |
5 | 3 |
Digits, URLs and code split into many short tokens, so they use more of your limit than ordinary prose of the same length.
When the “Add a “Part 1/3” line at the top of each part” option is on, each part starts with a line such as [Part 2/3] followed by a blank line. The tool reserves room for the longest possible version, [Part 999/999] plus the blank line, which costs 7 tokens, so each part’s text is cut to your Maximum per part minus 7 tokens (or minus 16 characters when counting by characters). The figure shown for each part includes its label, so it never exceeds the maximum you set.
Frequently asked questions
How many tokens is a word?
In English, roughly 0.75 words per token on average, but it varies. Characters per token above is calculated from your actual text.
Are counts for Claude or Gemini accurate?
They use their own tokenizers, so the GPT count here is only a guide; the platform's own usage figure is what counts.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting and splitting happen in your browser.
