ID Photo Maker

Turn any clear head-and-shoulders photo into a correctly sized ID photo. Position it with head guides, change a plain background to white, blue or red, and download a digital copy or a print-ready 6-inch sheet. Your photo never leaves your device.

How to use

  1. Choose a photo taken against a plain wall, facing the camera.
  2. Pick the photo size, then drag and zoom until the head fits between the guides.
  3. Optionally change the background colour and set a file size limit.
  4. Download the digital photo, or the print layout to print at any photo shop.

Options explained

Sizes
1 inch is 25×35 mm (295×413 px), 2 inch is 35×49 mm (413×579 px); small, large and passport variants are included. Pixel sizes are at 300 dpi, except the China ID card format, which is 358×441 px at 350 dpi.
Change colour
The background is detected from the edges of the photo and replaced, with a soft edge around the hair. It works best with a plain, evenly lit background; busy backgrounds need a real studio photo.
Maximum file size
Many online forms reject photos over a limit such as 50 KB or 100 KB. Enter the limit and the highest JPEG quality that fits is chosen automatically.
Print layout
Copies are arranged on 6-inch (4×6 in), 5-inch or A4 paper at 300 dpi with optional cutting guides. Print it at actual size without borders.

Preset sizes

These are the sizes built into the tool. Millimetre sizes are converted to pixels at 300 dpi with pixels = mm ÷ 25.4 × 300, except the China ID card and the 600 × 600 px presets, where the pixel size is set directly.

Preset Size (mm) Pixels
1 inch 25 × 35 295 × 413
1 inch, small 22 × 32 260 × 378
1 inch, large 33 × 48 390 × 567
2 inch 35 × 49 413 × 579
2 inch, small 35 × 45 413 × 531
China ID card 26 × 32 358 × 441
China passport 33 × 48 390 × 567
US 51 × 51 600 × 600
UK / EU 35 × 45 413 × 531
Canada 50 × 70 591 × 827
Japan 35 × 45 413 × 531
India 51 × 51 600 × 600

If your application needs a size that is not listed, use the custom pixel size.

Frequently asked questions

An application asks for “360×480 pixels, under 50 KB”. How do I make it?

Choose “Custom size (pixels)” as the photo size, enter the required width and height, and set the file size limit to the required KB. The downloaded photo meets both the pixel size and the file size.

Will the photo be accepted?

The tool gets the size, pixel dimensions, resolution and background colour right. Rules on lighting, expression, glasses and how recent the photo is vary by authority, so check the requirements of the office you are applying to.

Can I use it for a China ID card?

ID card photos are normally taken at the police station or an approved studio. The ID card format here is for online services that ask for a photo in that size.

How many photos fit on a 6-inch sheet?

Twelve 1-inch photos or four 2-inch photos with a 2 mm gap. A wider gap is easier to cut but may fit fewer.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Cropping, background replacement and compression all run in your browser.
