How to use
- Choose, drop or paste an image.
- Drag over each area you want to hide.
- Pick pixelate, blur or black box and adjust the strength.
- Download the redacted image.
Options explained
- Pixelate
- Replaces the area with coarse blocks of colour. Strength sets the block size relative to the image.
- Blur
- Smooths the area so shapes are still visible but details are not.
- Black box
- Covers the area completely. The safest choice for passwords, card numbers and other text.
Which method to choose
| What you are hiding | Suggested method |
|---|---|
| Passwords, card and account numbers, ID numbers | Black box |
| Names, addresses and other short text | Black box, or pixelate at high strength |
| Faces in a crowd | Pixelate or blur |
| A licence plate or a street sign | Pixelate at high strength |
| Something you only want to de-emphasise | Blur |
Whatever the method, zoom in on the result before you share it and check that nothing can still be read. Cover the whole area, including a margin around the text, because a box that stops at the edge of a character can leave part of it visible.
Frequently asked questions
Can pixelated text be recovered?
With weak settings, sometimes. Researchers have reconstructed short text from small pixel blocks. For sensitive text use the black box or a high strength.
Is the original image changed?
No. You download a new copy; the file on your device is untouched.
Is photo metadata removed?
Yes. The saved image is re-encoded without EXIF data such as GPS location, camera model and capture time.
