How to use

  1. Take a well-lit photo facing the camera in front of a plain wall, and choose it here.
  2. Pick your document, for example US passport (2×2 in) or UK and Schengen (35×45 mm).
  3. Drag and zoom so the top of the head and the chin sit on the guides.
  4. Switch the background to white if needed, then download the photo or the 4×6 print layout.

Options explained

US passport and visa
2×2 inches (51×51 mm), 600×600 px for digital use. The head, from chin to the top of the hair, should be 1 to 1 3/8 inches, which the guides approximate.
UK, EU and Schengen
35×45 mm, the size used by most of Europe and many other countries, including Japan and Australia.
Print layout
A 4×6 inch sheet at 300 dpi holds two 2×2 photos or more of the smaller sizes. Print it at actual size, with no borders or scaling.

Sizes in the tool and how many fit on a sheet

These are the Passports and visas presets, the pixel size of the digital photo, and how many photos Print layout places at the default Gap of 2 mm (the paper is turned sideways if that fits more):

Preset Size Digital photo 6 inch / 4×6 in 5 inch / 3.5×5 in A4
US passport and visa 51×51 mm 600×600 px 2 2 15
UK, EU and Schengen 35×45 mm 413×531 px 8 4 30
Canada passport 50×70 mm 591×827 px 2 2 12
Japan passport 35×45 mm 413×531 px 8 4 30
India visa 51×51 mm 600×600 px 2 2 15

Sizes other than the US and India ones are converted from millimetres at 300 dpi. A 4×6 inch sheet is 101.6×152.4 mm, so a 51 mm square leaves room for only one column once the margin and gap are taken off. If you need more copies of a US photo on one print, choose A4 instead. For an application that asks for an exact pixel size, use Custom size (pixels).

Frequently asked questions

Will my photo be accepted?

This tool gets the size, framing and background right. Authorities also check lighting, shadows, expression, glasses and how recent the photo is, so read the official guidance before you submit.

Can I use the digital file for an online application?

The US and India formats are 600×600 px, which matches their online requirements. Other countries often ask for larger images online, for example at least 600×750 px for UK applications, so check the minimum before uploading.

How does the background change work?

The background colour is detected from the edges of the photo and replaced wherever it connects to them. A plain, evenly lit wall gives a clean result.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is processed on your device and is never sent anywhere.
